Conflict is a part of human interaction. Mediation is a way to help people improve the quality of their communication when in the midst of conflict. Mediation allows people to meet in a private setting where a neutral person (a mediator), helps them work out a solution to their problems. Mediators facilitate the discussion between parties; helping them to clarify issues, develop alternatives, and make decisions. The process is confidential and gives people an opportunity to become more open to another perspective and gain interpersonal understanding. The mediator is not a judge, and does not decide who is “right.” The parties themselves make the choices that lead to a mutually satisfactory agreements.
